Meditation means to still the mind. Essentially, people meditate for one real reason, and that’s to stop the incessant stream of thinking that’s going on in their mind of either dwelling on the past, or worrying about the future. Even if you’re not dwelling on the past or worrying the future, you might be having a happy memory about the past, which is great, and you might have a happy vision for the future, which is awesome, but even then, it’s important just to shut it off — the whole thing, and just see who you are beyond your thoughts. That’s what meditation is about.
It’s about stilling the mind so that your true self, this thing that’s beyond the mind, the life force, the spirit, the energy that’s beyond you, comes to the surface.
It’s not only beyond your mind, it’s beyond your life experience. It’s beyond your age. It’s beyond your gender. It’s beyond your race. It’s beyond your country. It’s beyond everything, and it’s that sort of thing that you might talk about like everyone is one, or we all become one…It’s beyond form. Form could be your body, your mind, your job title, your penis, etc. People who meditate go beyond form, and they find a new kind of inner peace and awareness of their surroundings. That’s why people meditate.
There are formal ways to meditate, which are great. One very simple way, is just to focus on your breath. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, watch it rise and fall, and come and go. Listen to the sounds around you. These are very simple ways to still your mind. It can happen in 10, 20, 30 seconds, a minute. Mind still.
Another way is to walk around to go talk to people, and go outside of yourself, and connect with people, and really, really, deeply listen to them.
The sole purpose of meditation is to still your mind so that you can feel the power of who you really are.
Looking forward,
John
